You do not need a reason to visit the United Kingdom. You can pack your bags
at any time of the year and immerse yourself in the cultural and historical
delights that this island nation, comprising of England, Scotland, Northern
Ireland and Wales, has to offer.
One reason for this is the countrys rich history, and the way it has
preserved its past. You can buy the Great British Heritage Pass and visit
600 castles, palaces, stately homes and gardens. If you think that this is
one too many sites to visit, then you can visit historic towns such as Bath,
famous for its Roman baths or Stonehenge in Wiltshire or Giant Causeway in
Northern Ireland. Each site will leave you awestruck
For the culture buff there is no better country to visit than UK. There are
more than 650 music, drama, art, opera, poetry and literature festivals held
every year. But what will transport you to a different era are the literary
walks. You can visit Stratford-at-Avon and be transported to the life and
times of William Shakespeare; or visit Jane Austens home, the author
of Pride and Prejudice.
If you happen to be a James Bond fan then you must visit the James Bond itinerary.
It will give you a chance to ride in the speedboat used by James Bond and
learn how to become a spy. Also, when on a visit to England you cant
miss Oxford and Cambridge. Both these universities are steeped in history
and have some of the most stately buildings that you can seen on a university
campus.
If, however, you happen to be a museum lover then there can be no better
place than UK. The country has over 2,500 museums and galleries, some of them
unique like the Lawnmower Museum, the Pencil Museum and the Bakelite Museum.
But it is the British Museum in London that has some of the best collections
in the world. Not surprisingly, 4 million tourists pass through its glass
doors every year.
The UK is also a shoppers delight. It has some of the best department
stores in the world. These include Harrods, rated by many as the world's finest
department store, the six-floor Hamleys toy store that set up shop in 1760,
Harvey Nichols, considered the last word in fashion, hair and beauty, and
Selfridges, a store that stocks more than 3,000 brands of home, fashion, food,
health, beauty and leisure goods. Besides this, every major town has a high
street where you can find everything from a butchers shop to bookstores,
departmental stores, antique shops and hardware shops.
When exhausted, you can wind up in Britains 60,000-odd pubs. These
are also some kind of an institution in themselves. In almost every pub you
have to pick up your beer, also called real ale, yourself; it is not served
to your table. Also there is no culture of tipping. The best you can do is
to ask someone to have a drink on you.
The country has much to offer to nature lovers. It is blessed by a lush green
countryside, fine beaches, heart stopping coastal cliffs and mountain ranges.
It also has a Lake District famous for the stunning Lake Windermere. Another
area famed for its scenery and heritage is Cornwall. It has inspired several
artists, sculptors and writers.
From the beautiful English landscapes in the north to the great city of London
in the south east or coastal charms in the south west, England is truly a
destination to explore. From castles to cathedrals, museums and musicals to
moorlands, friendly pubs to lively street markets, you'll find it all and
more in England.
Scotland features Edinburgh, the capital city, home to the Scottish Parliament
and world famous Edinburgh Castle. The Royal Mile sweeps down from the castle
through the medieval old town to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen's
official residence in Scotland. Every summer the city hosts the annual Edinburgh
International Festival, the Fringe Festival and the Military Tattoo.
Wales is a land of mystery and culture, history and outstanding natural beauty.
The beauty of the countryside, the wealth of its traditions and history, the
spirit of its people, make Wales a wonderful place to visit. From rolling
hills to golden beaches, from soaring sea cliffs to the rugged grandeur of
Snowdonia, the scenery of Wales is spectacular.
Northern Ireland has some of the most stunning landscapes in the world. It
is a land of gloriously green romantic countryside, spectacular coasts and
mountains. The historic cities of Belfast, Derry and Armagh are well worth
visiting and all boast lively pubs and fine restaurants. The lively capital
city of Belfast has an extensive range of shops, clubs, pubs, theatres, parks,
galleries, restaurants, leisure centres and much more to explore by the tourist.
The UK has all the four seasons -- winter, spring, summer and autumn
and the temperatures range from a low of -15 C at some places in winters to
a high of 30 C in summers at others. This brings in much variety in the lifestyle
and culture of the people of UK, making it a great place to visit.
